Going on a surf trip is one of the most exciting things you can do as a surfer. Stepping away from your local waves in search of something different. A different wave, a different vibe, a different culture, and of course, lots of surfing. Many of us are in search of that perfect wave, but that ideal wave is different for everyone. Some may be looking for those slow rollers to start on their surfing journey, while others may be looking for the perfect intermediate waves to progress their surfing. And, of course, there are those that just want to score world class waves.
As the founder of Surf Captain and a long time customer of Witch’s Rock Surf Camp, I am thrilled to partner with Witch’s Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo, Costa Rica as the official Surf Captain Recommended Surf Trip partner. Whatever level of surfer you are, Witches Rock is the best surf camp I’ve come across. What I like best about Witches Rock is that they make everything super easy, from airport pickups, to a huge selection of boards, to knowing when and where to take you. And, let's not forget the most epic beach bar setup – El Vaquero Beach Bar – with perfect sunset views just about every night. At Witch's Rock, you can just kick back with an ice cold Imperial and know that they have it all taken care of.
About Costa Rica
Costa Rica is one of my favorite places in the world. The waves are what draws me there, but the Pura Vida vibe is what keeps me coming back. Tropical weather, amazing food, friendly locals, a relaxed vibe, and good surf. What's not to like!
Costa Rica is not known as a big wave destination. You are more likely to get chest high to a little overhead surf on any given week. While there is seasonality in their surf seasons, it is an extremely consistent destination year around. There are great waves to learn on like at Tamarindo Beach, there are world class surf spots like Witch’s Rock or Ollies Point, and there’s everything in between.
My Witch's Rock Surf Camp Experience
My first time at Witch's Rock Surf Camp I was traveling solo. I wanted to escape the harsh winter weather on the East Coast and score tropical waves. I was in the “advanced group”, which just means you have a surf guide that takes your group to the best surf destination every day. This is in contrast to the beginner or intermediate groups, which have instructors to help you progress in your surfing. My goal was simply to get the best surf. During my week, I met lifelong friends, scored epic 6 foot Ollies Point, ate amazing food and surfed good waves every day. I couldn’t have been more stoked. One thing that stood out for me in my experience as a solo traveler was how easy and fun it was meeting people in my surfing group and at the Witch’s Rock hotel/restaurant/beach bar. It’s just an awesome environment.
I’ve since been back to the surf camp twice, returning with friends I met on my first trip, and meeting new friends every time. More recently, I’ve been staying at their surf hotel for multiple months at a time while working remotely. The experience has always been top first class.
